Week of November 12

Hello everyone! The new week brings a new letter focus: Rr. This letter is particularily hard for some preschoolers to pronounce. Some preschoolers will use a w sound for r, saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit". Don't worry; certain consonant sounds are tough for a preschooler to pronounce. For instance, producing a t sound instead of a k, such as "tate" for "cake," is a common substitution, and nothing to be concerned about unless he's doing it past age 5. Consonant sounds such as k and g are also hard for preschoolers because they're produced at the back of the mouth and your child can't actually see how to make the sound. Same for pronouncing the letter R, it's hard to see how to make  the sound; so one of my favorite ways to teach preschoolers how to make the R sound is to have them say the letter E sound ("eeee") and then add the R sound at the end ("rrrrr"). This way they can see and feel how it sounds. Here is the letter r song so you can practice singing it at home.

R...................She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain
Roy’s dog Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.
Roy’s dog Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.
Rover races, Rover chases,
Rover chews on Roy’s shoelaces.
Oh, yes, Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.

And one more quick note: we are taking a field trip to the downtown public library this Friday at 1:00pm and still need volunteers. Please sign up at the sign-in table. Thanks, and happy Monday!
