December Calendar

11/26-12/1

Hello all!!

This week we are focusing on the letters Pp, and Qq; so please encourage your preschooler to bring in a show and share that begins with one of the letters (Margot today brought in a pink and purple pony. Now that's what I'm talkin' about!!!).

Our theme this week is The 5 Senses. We are first identifying what each of the senses are, and then we will explore the many ways that we use them. So maybe sometime in your daily routine, or while you're in the car with your preschooler, you could talk about what senses you may be using at the moment.

It's officially snowy outside so don't forget snow-gear for your little bundles! One thing in particular I've noticed to be especially important is warm gloves. And don't forget, Miss Patti's rule is to have everyone take their boots off by the sign-in desk, and then place them on the red rug by the hooks so that we don't get icky, slippery, floors.

And one last note: I don't know if you've ever experienced lunch-time around CCP, but one might say that it is a particularly active time of day. This said....we'd LOVE to have parent volunteers during lunch time! Lunch is every day from 11:30am until about 12:30pm, and we just simply need helpers to regulate preschooler behavior, open packages, enforce manners, assist with potties, etc. If you can help please talk to one of the teachers.

And not to scare you or anything, but next week is December. So attached below is the December Calendar.

Week of Thanksgiving

Hello everyone!

Happy almost Thanksgiving! It's a three-day week this week, and it's going to be a fun one! We will continue to focus on the letter Rr, but we'll switch our unit from dinosaurs to Harvest and Giving Thanks. Monday we are going to be making our group soup. If you need a reminder on which ingredient you were assigned to bring in, shoot me a quick email.

With our giving thanks unit, I know that most preschoolers look at showing gratitude, or saying "thank you" as a simple manner of politeness, so I really encourage you to show your children this week what being thankful really means, and this is especially important with that greedy little holiday right around the corner. Here's a great article that I found that has some really great tips on ways for teaching children to be thankful.

7 Tips for Teaching Children Gratitude

See you at school!!

Week of November 12

Hello everyone! The new week brings a new letter focus: Rr. This letter is particularily hard for some preschoolers to pronounce. Some preschoolers will use a w sound for r, saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit". Don't worry; certain consonant sounds are tough for a preschooler to pronounce. For instance, producing a t sound instead of a k, such as "tate" for "cake," is a common substitution, and nothing to be concerned about unless he's doing it past age 5. Consonant sounds such as k and g are also hard for preschoolers because they're produced at the back of the mouth and your child can't actually see how to make the sound. Same for pronouncing the letter R, it's hard to see how to make  the sound; so one of my favorite ways to teach preschoolers how to make the R sound is to have them say the letter E sound ("eeee") and then add the R sound at the end ("rrrrr"). This way they can see and feel how it sounds. Here is the letter r song so you can practice singing it at home.

R...................She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain
Roy’s dog Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.
Roy’s dog Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.
Rover races, Rover chases,
Rover chews on Roy’s shoelaces.
Oh, yes, Rover runs all over.
Rover runs.

And one more quick note: we are taking a field trip to the downtown public library this Friday at 1:00pm and still need volunteers. Please sign up at the sign-in table. Thanks, and happy Monday!

November News

Hello all!!! Here's just a quick post to remind you of what we've got going on next week.

We're setting up a grocery store in our dramatic play area, so if you have any food boxes, jars, or containers, please bring them in on Monday and we'll use them in the store.

We are also beginning our Dinosaur unit; so feel free to send your child to preschool with anything dinosaur!

Next week we'll continue talking about the letter 'Ss'. Here's the letter S song so you can sing it at home:
